“How does an R&D engineer survive in a startup?”
“How does an R&D engineer survive in a startup?” Ihor Vustianiuk, Data Scientist at Beetroot, held two bright lectures as part of the IT Stars project!

We thank Ihor and the participants for their activity, we noted the most interesting things.

What is R&D? Research and Development — research and development. The R&D department is responsible for innovation: creating new products and services or improving existing ones. Often this term refers to special divisions or teams dealing with new product functionality, prototypes, inventions, scientific work, etc.

In the early phases of a startup, the R&D engineer role may combine several other more typical IT roles.
Some examples of tasks an R&D engineer may encounter and the roles they typically belong to include:

Software Engineer: implementation of algorithms, writing auxiliary programs for the scientific team, backend
QA Engineer: unit tests for code, data or machine learning models
Data Engineer: extracting data from static files, databases and APIs, filtering, validating, transforming and saving this data
ML Engineer: organization of experiments, integration of own or third-party models and services into the product
etc.

The participants asked interesting questions. Ihor talked about the possibility of working with startups – directly, for example, but medical startups usually do not want to work with Ukrainians in this way, so they are looking for a partner company in Ukraine.
— How to become a data scientist in 2023?
— What projects can be implemented in medicine with the help of IT?
The answers to these and other questions can be viewed in the lecture

Ihor also recommended courses for those who want their own startup:

Startup Academy from Genesis
Genesis Academy regularly conducts courses in both technical and business disciplines
Startup School from Y Combinator
“How to create a startup” from Prometheus
The basics of entrepreneurship from TechStars
Course on venture deals from TechStars

The video presentation has slides with other different free courses. Including data science, which was asked about.
