The results of last week’s career orientation lectures

A new portion of interesting and useful information for students at univarsity and high school students. We have also reviewed the most interesting for you from the speakers who shared their experience.

The lecture was held by Odesa IT Family together with Odesa National University named after I. I. Mechnikov on the initiative of Yury Mykolayovych Berkov, senior lecturer of the Department of Computer Systems and Technologies, and with the support of the Atom Space educational tech space.

Olga Mindova, Lead Recruiter DataArt, and Denis Fedenko, Senior Delivery Manager at Intellias shared their skills.

Olga Mindova told how to make a СV and cover letter if you don’t have experience yet.

What should be on the resume: name and contact details, education, work experience, skills, level of English/other languages. Optional: photo, hobby, social networks. If there is no work experience, add: the position for which you are submitting a CV, pet projects, internships/volunteering, achievements.

What exactly makes your resume good? Conciseness, readability, ability to copy data, relevance.

Name your resume file with your last name for convenience: CV_Position_Lastname_Name

What should not be done?

  • very bright CVs
  • overload
  • unreadable
  • too long (2 pages without much work experience is already long)
  • incomplete resume (without necessary information — education, experience)
  • own assessment of one’s skills which is often overestimated (it is better to leave it to others to assess during a technical interview)

What to do when the resume is ready?

  • read/reread
  • check grammar errors https://languagetool.org/uk/
  • let someone else review

Cover letter. The main goal of such a letter is to interest the employer and to distinguish yourself from other potential job candidates.

Denis Fedenko told us who a delivery manager is, in which projects he can participate and his own experience of cooperation with Porsche, Ferrari, etc.

Who is a Delivery Manager?

It’s basically the same Project Manager, but with an added focus on the output of what the team delivers. But at the same time, she is a classic manager who deals with all organizational tasks, while deeply immersed in the technical component. The task of the position is to be sure that the project is successful, it provides the client with what he wants and participates in additional activities.

Key topics of responsibility:

  • Leadership
  • Development of people
  • Communication / Presentation
  • Conflict management
  • Decision-making
  • Time management
  • Team management
  • Project management
  • Management of software engineering

Responsibilities related to the project:

  • Project Governance — coordination of all aspects related to structures (who works how, who is in charge of what, how to build communication).
  • Scope Management — what needs to be done and which task is the highest priority.
  • Schedule Management — how much time we have, how much we need — combine it and understand how to move.
  • Profitability Management —  the responsibility to ensure that this work brings money.
  • Team Management — how the team works, whether everyone is in their place and coping with their duties.
  • Communications Management — communications planning, managing communications during project implementation to ensure that it works according to plan.
  • Risk Management — consider in advance all the threats that can interfere with the project, as well as a plan to solve them.
  • Engineering Excellence — developing a project quality policy, defining safety standards and ensuring engineering practices that promote engineering excellence.

Denys also recommended a selection of literature, which we will soon publish in our permanent column.
